9 CELEBRATING CHINESE NEW YEAR IN BINONDO

Spell out BINONDO. It is not just a simple seven-letter-word but it is also the place where our Chinese ancestors settled. China has been part of our world as it is sketched out anywhere in the Universe. Mind you each country has Chinatown. And so to speak, we used to believe in Chinese customs. Now tell me who never read daily Horoscope, not even once but many times. And who never check your luck this year through your Chinese birth year? Although we had current issues with maritime disputes but it won’t be another hindrance to cut the knot with Chinese people. They’re with us a very long time ago. Again, a very long time ago before Spanish occupation.

And as 2013 started we are hoping for another successful year. Have you check your Feng Shui outlook in the year of the Water Snake? How lucky are you for this year..hmm I bet you have checked already or even bought something to stop the curse.

We pay a visit in Binondo last February 9 to check the lively streets of little China. Expectedly there were fiesta-like caravan, loudest ever drum beats to pimp out those bad energy, a Rio Carnival inspired where our gay brothers and sisters entertained local and foreign visitors, and also Dragon and Lion Dance. And I thought there were Tikoy for free..unfortunately haven’t found one.

So we chose to walked around the streets and be entertained despite high volume of people arrived. We were squeezed but we just play on through the flow of the crowd. I saw different lucky charms, fruits and vegetables tied with red strands, young pineapple fruits, and longest line for Eng Bee Tin stores for special and delicious Hopia and Tikoy.

After never ending walking in the middle of crowded streets, I feel like I need to taste the savour of Chinese dish. So we decided to visit the famous “Estero” – Manila’s Chinese haven. Estero Fast Food Restaurant merged with different Chinese flavours with a touch of Filipino cuisine.

Buttered Prawn

Lemon Chicken

Fried Garlic Frog Legs

We ordered too much for just the two of us. Buttered Prawn - best prawn I have tasted, four pieces per serving coated with bread crumps, nothing left over except the skin, even the juice is also perfect for Yang Chow Rice. Lemon Chicken – though not my preference because of sugar added results to the presence of sweetness but the lemon flavour added the crave. And first time ever Fried Garlic Frog Legs – at first you thought it’s just a simple Chicken legs but when I tasted it I started loving it. I don’t have any problems with exotic foods; in fact I’d like to try it.

Okay I’m not good in describing foods – “calling all food bloggers” [shouting here!!!] but you surely gonna enjoy the taste of authentic Binondo foodstuffs.

Though the Environment and Cleanliness is fair, Service is average but the Taste and Price stood out. For just P550 we had one of the best Philippine eats with authentic Chinese delicacy.

And a person that has Chinese blood inside, I’m hoping for a lucky and successful year of the Water Snake. As I read for the Dragons, it would be a positive year for us. And my piece of advise, they are just our guide it’s us who create our future.
